Pediatric doctors specialize in the treatment of children from birth to early adulthood.
They provide routine preventive health examinations, and diagnose and treat a wide range of illnesses.
From giving childhood immunizations and treating minor injuries to advising teenagers about reproductive health, the job is never the same from day to day.
Even solo practitioners have staff, such as nurses or medical assistants, to help with providing care, but pediatricians who work for health care organizations often work in a team setting, consulting with colleagues on patient care.
The job typically requires long hours, and many doctors find themselves called to emergency situations at any time of the day or night.
While a staff is on hand to help with administrative duties, such as billing, insurance and records administration, a pediatrician still oversees the process and typically spends many hours working on patient charts and other paperwork.
When patients need care beyond the routine, pediatric doctors coordinate that care with specialists and hospitals.
Because the patients are minors, a large part of the job consists of consulting and advising parents and guardians on health care topics, including explaining treatments and procedures
