Job summary
Controls Manager - Middle East and Africa

As part of the AWS controls team, you will work with highly motivated experts and innovators in the data center industry. You will be responsible for a team of engineers innovating, deploying, optimizing, and maintaining the automation systems within the data centers. Automation systems consist of building management system (BMS) and electrical power monitoring system (EPMS). Using Amazon leadership principles, you will develop new processes and standards while innovating in the controls space.

The ideal candidate will have experience managing an international or multi-city team of highly skilled individuals. The candidate will possess a project/construction management, mechanical, electrical or technology background that enables him/her to undertake the challenges of sophisticated controls platforms and a demonstrated ability to think broadly and strategically in aligning building controls and automation with the larger objectives of the business.

Preferred location is Dubai but can also be located in Cape Town, SA or Bahrain

Key job responsibilities
  • Able to implement and track team goals, report the status of ongoing projects upwards.
  • Actively lead and participate in the hiring process and develop new engineers.
  • Articulate ideas through clear and concise verbal and written skills.
  • Mentor, train, and develop controls engineers professional growth
  • Ability to ascertain customer needs to help develop project scope and specifications.
  • Provide technical assistance as needed to internal customers.
  • Understanding of: electrical diagrams, control diagrams, building operations, control circuits, industrial HVAC.
  • Oversee the development of control system scopes of work to include electrical and controls schematics, cable and conduit schedules, and logic diagram.
  • Manage project engineering to determine the scope of work relative to the design intent of the customer needs.
  • Coordinate project work internally within the department and externally with other departments to ensure on-time completion of projects within budget.


A day in the life
Middle East and Africa manager will directly manage a growing team of controls engineers with a focus on adding capacity to AWS Data Centers via new Construction and maintaining a high level of uptime in our existing infrastructure.

About the team
The EMEA Controls team performs New Construction, Retrofit and Service with 24/7 support for the controls systems into all AWS leased owned and colocation Data Centres. The team ensures high availability and reliability of critical systems inside the data centre to our primary customer, the operation staff that operate each data centre. The team is spread across 14 counties and approximately 70 engineers

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology, HVAC, or other related engineering degrees and 7 years of relevant experience or A.S. and 10 years of relevant controls work experience
  • 5 years of experience designing, configuring, programming, installing or servicing one of the following products: Siemens: Apogee, Honeywell: Building Controls, Trend: Building Controls, Schneider Electric: Power Logic/Struxureware, Rockwell Automation: FactoryTalk, Ignition, Tridium: Niagra, Eaton: Foreseer, ABB: Decathalon, Johnson Controls: Metasys
  • At least 3 years of leadership experience managing a team of engineers.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • M.S. In an engineering-based discipline or ten 10+ years related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Six (6) years of experience in either design programming, or startup/commissioning.
  • Four (4) years of experience in project management.
  • Experience with controls in data centers or other critical facilities.
  • Networking administration experience.
  • MQTT communication protocol experience.
  • Experience in any of the following systems: Siemens, Eaton, Tridium, Distech, Struxureware, APC, Ignition, or ABB.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • This role requires domestic and or international travel up to 30%.
  • Solid foundation in communication protocols.
  • Windows power user skill set, proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and project management software.
  • Demonstrated understanding of engineering documentation, electrical diagrams and standard operating procedures.
  • Excellent communication skills, teamwork, organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple stakeholder deliverables, requirements and navigate difficult situations.
