Core Task:
Develops design programmes in conjunction with Lead Designer and Discipline Leads and ensures execution of project deliverables are consistent with the Project Plan
Ensures discipline project teams under their management comply with Project Execution Plans, including design management, project management and BIM management plans, and are adhered to throughout the project delivery process
Manages design procedures - information exchange / issue logs / RFI s
Schedules weekly design coordination meetings
Confirms with Lead Designer co-ordination issues are resolved (Through use of task log or similar tracking tools)
Reviews scope of work, roles & responsibilities, and deliverables prepared by discipline leads to check alignment and consistency with Client and contract requirements.
Assists the PM with controlling change
Assists the PM with managing risk
Responsible for periodic project progress reports to senior management
Responsible for defining the quality budget and schedule for completing the technical quality review on deliverables

Managerial Responsibilities:
Planning and monitoring others work to achieve set deadlines
Mentoring junior team members
Manages the assigned team of Architects, Engineers and Technicians on a day to day basis and ensures design scope compliance is achieved throughout
Manages design scope on medium to large scale projects or particular packages for large, complex projects ensuring project scope and objectives are met,
Motivates team and facilitates them to bring ideas and solutions to the table
Routinely interacts with clients, contractors and others using skills of persuasion and negotiation to resolve critical issues
Promotes teamwork within design team (including the GDC), maintaining positive moral and instilling a productive culture within the team
Support and develop junior staff through guidance, mentoring and leadership of their development
Ensures, directly and through subordinates, that project scope is completed and meets all requirements of the Design Brief
Support Directors with operational responsibilities which includes development and implementing Technical Excellence initiatives, management of resources (HR), training initiatives (CPD)
Commercial Responsibilities:
Understands and implements project management principles and able to work within project budgets which includes fees and managing design to budget
Contribute to preparation of bids
Engage in marketing and business development
Managing Sub-consultants:
Prepare technical requirements and responsibility matrix for each area of scope for sub-consultant contracts in conjunction with Discipline Leads to ensure all scope is accounted for
Manage updates to sub-consultant contracts and assist PM in preparation of final documents
Establish and Manage Design Procedures:
In conjunction with Project Management and Design Teams, develop & maintain the Design Management Plan (DMP) for use by the entire project team. The DMP will include information such as organisation charts, project directory, communication routes etc.
Establish and implement design procedures and protocols to be followed by the Design Team for successful project delivery including project scope, requirements, deadlines, digital design management systems and tools
Plans for Safety in Design throughout all design stages of a project
Manage information exchange including monitoring of deliverables issued by sub- consultants to determine with Discipline Leads whether submittals are as per agreed scopes
Assist PM, Lead Designer & Discipline Leads in preparing technical content of Change Requests to Clients.
Monitoring Design Schedule and Progress:
Produce an integrated design schedule using MS Project or Primavera following liaison with all Design Team members including key milestones laid out by the client. Internal milestones, co-ordination sequences and delivery dates.
Monitor design progress and identify areas of risk / concern that are approaching
Holistic view of design deliverables, who they need to be prepared by and when they need to be delivered. Monitor Discipline Leads and Sub-Consultants.
Documentation and Deliverables:
Prepare progress reports in the necessary format as required by PM / Client
Monitor and collate comments from the client on design submission and manage responses from the Design Team
Track and monitor status of all comments affecting design stage and final close-out
Organises, logs, tracks and monitors Tender queries and responses:
Reviews tender submissions for construction works, contributes to Tender Report prepared by PM
Manage project data exchange websites where necessary
Organise Project Meetings and define the Decision-Making Process
Prepare and agree with the PM & Lead Designer a formal schedule for all project workshops and meetings including an outline agenda, location etc. Obtain all necessary input from the Design Team to ensure all key issues are addressed
Attends Client meetings scheduled, chaired & recorded by PM
Schedule, chair and record Design Team meetings where required
Schedules, chairs and records Design Progress meetings regarding common design & BIM Tasks
Schedules, chairs and records BIM & Navisworks meetings to review accuracy and quality of discipline BIM model information, scope compliance, and coordination
Prepare and issue minutes of all recurring scheduled project workshops and meetings, circulate these minutes for comment before formal issue to the client where applicable
Establish procedures and processes to assist in the briefing and information gathering process such as a Request for Information (RFI) system. Responsibilities and roles of decision making to be identified
General:
This is a Client, PM and Lead Designer facing role and demonstrable skills in maintaining and developing both internal and external relationships are required
The Senior Design Manager will be expected to convey a positive attitude whilst maintaining the highest standards in undertaking their work and acting with integrity and professionalism at all times. They should comply with the firms laid down standards, procedures and processes and implement these effectively

Minimum RequirementsSpecific Skills Required:Project/Design Skills:
Ability to fulfil all the above duties and responsibilities
Excellent technical knowledge of multi-discipline A/E products & services
Proficient understanding of design & construction processes and interfaces between disciplines / trades
A good awareness of Autodesk Revit, Autodesk BIM 360 Glue, Navisworks, presentation software and managing projects in a BIM environment
Knowledgeable of Industry BIM standards, processes and general approaches
Schedules BIM model checks on projects according to established and company standards to ensure completeness of discipline models
Ability to extract, manipulate and present BIM model information as required e.g. at client meetings / presentations
Developed skills in the use a variety of software / media in the development, of presentations
Full understanding of Safety in Design requirements and able to communicate the principals with the design team
Developed presentation skills (written & verbal)
Proficiency in MS Project and other Design Planning & Management tools

Experience :
Minimum 12 years post undergraduate education
Proven related professional experience in a Design Management or Multi-disciplinary Design Practice
Experience of working on large scale projects
Preferred Qualifications- Bachelor of Science in Design Management or Bachelor of Science in a relevant design discipline
